Musk's Boring Company a Stepping Stone to Humans on Mars

This video make the “speculative”case that Musk’s Boring Company is also a technological "stepping stone" to fulfill his mission of getting humans to Mars and making us a multi-planet species.

Big domes covering Mars settlements on the surface look great in illustrations. However they are very problematic to build and maintain. Wild, month-long Martian dust storms would sandblast the surface and leave it covered with dust. Solar panels on our little Mars rovers already experience this.

However, taking advantage of existing ancient lava tubes on Mars and expanding and extending them with Boring Company tunnels would give humans extensive, interconnected habitats protected from radiation and temperature changes. The technology would also facilitate mining the surface for ancient ice and other valuable materials.

NASA has embraced the idea of utilizing lava tubes on the Moon as habitats. They don’t anticipate using Musk’s boring technology …. Yet.
