Hubble v Webb: Comparing Space Telescope Images

Hubble v Webb: Comparing Space Telescope Images

The image here contains a diamond-shaped area which is the first full-resolution image of deep, deep space taken by the Webb Space Telescope. What makes this interesting is that the surrounding area is an image of exactly the same part of the sky taken with the Hubble Space Telescope.

Those “furry spots” which could have been stars out of focus are now revealed to be individual galaxies. They look ridiculously close together, but remember that they are all at different distances from the camera — farther and farther out into deep space — separated by hundreds or thousands of lightyears. Each one is quite alone in the universe.

Now, a treat: A scientist has created a short video (one and a half minutes) that allows you to slide from a totally Hubble image to a totally Webb image. You can watch a fuzzy dot turn into a very distant spiral galaxy.

Open this and play!
