Aurora Borealis - Solar Geomagnetic Storm

Aurora Borealis - Solar Geomagnetic Storm

From Frances to Paw:

Could you all see the northern lights last night? Many years ago Daddy took us onto the roof of our carport to await a sighting of Aurora Borealis. I have researched and found that in the mid-1950’s, such storms occurred three times. At least one of these storms must have been G5 in order to affect the southern states. And even though we never saw any northern lights that evening, I recall how magical it was sitting on the roof in the wee hours of the morning with my parents. A sweet memory. ❤️Frances

From Paw to Frances:

When I was very young but old enough to remember it well … my dad woke me up on a clear, winter night to take me out into the backyard of 60 Westover Road to see waving curtains of green light in the sky that lasted for a long time. He was clearly delighted to show Mommichen and me this phenomenon. I imagine he tried to explain the physics of it but to me, it was just a magical light show.

I also recall him holding me up and Mommichen squeezing into us both …. it was cold and we were under-dressed. I lost a slipper. But we didn’t want to risk missing anything. Just as we mentioned going in the sky would brighten and flash with a new swirling wave. Finally, the curtains just rose up and up and were gone.

Mommichen made us hot chocolate and that was part of the event I remember well. He often told this story to friends years later and kept reminding me that I had seen a fantastic phenomenon. I believe it was a big accomplishment for him as a father. LoveYa! Robbie
