Although not my normal subject matter, I enjoyed this excellent Scientific American article revealing that Viking women held a place of economic influence in Viking households and society.

Cloth, woven exclusively be women, became a valuable trade commodity and even a recognized form of currency. In literally a cottage industry, weaving created wealth and status in the form of standardized bolts of cloth which had a recognized trade value against silver.
