Cape of Good Hope

Cape of Good Hope

Here is the itinerary of the final segment of the Viking round-the-world cruise that Mom and I so often kidded about taking .... someday. We didn’t think we were serious, either.

However, Viking kept dropping the price of the last leg of the voyage. They have now thrown in free airfare! We qualify for multiple discounts because we have taken earlier Viking trips. Well .... they kept bribing us and finally reached the point where we could no longer resist. By hopping on in South Africa, we are taking that dream trip .... just getting aboard very late in the voyage.

We had such an outstanding time on the “Viking Sea’s” inaugural voyage that getting to travel on her sister ship, “Viking Sky,” ranks way up there on our bucket list.

The final leg, cruising the western shore of Africa, has quite a few days on the open Atlantic (maybe that’s why it still had some unclaimed cabins). However, the few quiet days at sea on the “Viking Sea” were very enjoyable opportunities to explore the ship, enjoy the lavish entertainment, take advantage of the on-board educational lectures, take tours below, read and generally relax .... until ‘Formal English Teatime.’

We will visit Cape Town just a bit North-West of the Cape of Good Hope (35.95 S latitude), but have discovered that our trip to New Zealand took us all much farther South. Duneden on the South Island is at 45.9 S Latitude. You will recall that’s where the South Pole expeditions all took off from. We visited a fabulous whaling and Antarctic exploration museum there.
